Enabling Towson Students to Inspire Young Citizens

Donald D. and Margaret M. Cooper Scholarship recipient Amanda Stagge '17 is grateful for the scholarship support provided to her. Last fall she worked with her third-grade class on a civics project to make children's books more accessible through local businesses.

The Donald D. and Margaret M. Cooper Scholarship provides scholarships based on financial need to undergraduate students majoring in early childhood education. This fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Cooper in 1994 through an estate gift and was endowed in 2010. Towson University is grateful for the thoughtful legacy gift that Donald and Margaret established, which has provided much needed scholarship assistance to 30 students to date.

Amanda Stagge"I have grown increasingly grateful to Towson University and its scholarship support for providing hands-on opportunities to prepare me for "real-life" teaching. Scholarships have meant everything to my professional growth as a teacher and have provided me with invaluable experiences and opportunities. While student teaching third grade, the class participated in a civics' project that involved asking local businesses to house books in their waiting area for kids to read while running errands with their family. The students wrote persuasive letters asking if businesses could provide the space, then the elementary school would provide the books. We received a reply from one business saying they would absolutely house the books, so the process of gathering books began. It was extremely rewarding to see the students passionate about contributing to the community and improving children's literacy. Their excitement was infectious. I am forever grateful for such experiences."
