Memorial Gift Impacts Generations of Children

Mary Daniels Taylor with students

Mary Daniels Taylor was a lifelong proponent of reading skills for children, believing they were a necessary component to a successful life.

Established in 2003, the Mary Daniels Taylor Memorial Scholarship honors an extraordinary teacher and her passion for reading. As an educator, Mrs. Taylor understood that good reading skills were key to a child’s personal and intellectual development.

Mary Daniels Taylor served on the faculty of the Towson University College of Education from 1964 through 1983, and remained active as an emeritus faculty member after retirement. Her particular area of expertise was in remedial reading and children’s literature. She worked intensely to make quality literary works available to disadvantaged and minority students in the Baltimore City School System.

Her husband, Carl, and daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy), established the endowment in Mary’s memory to provide financial assistance to a deserving student pursuing an M.Ed. in reading at Towson University.

The purpose of the endowment is to offer financial backing to Towson University graduate students pursuing intensive internships that might otherwise not pay enough to cover expenses. The scholarship is targeted to any student seeking in-depth experiences in all phases of remedial reading—from diagnosis of learning disabilities through design and implementation of tailored improvement programs.

Internships are a crucial part of the master’s in reading program at Towson University, enabling students to learn by doing and putting classroom theory into action.

The Mary Daniels Taylor Memorial Scholarship will prepare future educators to shape the minds and lives of students for generations to come.
